Trauma Focused Therapies
Experiencing trauma can have a lasting impact on your senses of self and safety, as well as on your nervous system. You might feel stuck in repeated fight/flight/freeze responses to situations. For example, anger, fear, or dissociation, can interfere with your functioning in many areas of life: sleep, relationships, work, school, being in public, etc.
Depending on the type of trauma, it can negatively affect your ability to trust yourself or other people, and you might be constantly scanning the environment for threats.
Triggers can be sights, sounds, smells, and internal experiences in your mind and body that remind you of the trauma.
It is possible to heal from trauma, even though the effects are intense and far-reaching in your life.
Doing trauma-focused psychotherapy, such as Cognitive Processing Therapy, EMDR, and reparenting your inner child can be very effective for resolving how trauma has affected your beliefs about yourself and the world, your emotional needs, identity, ability to trust, and your distressing memories.
Other strategies like EFT Tapping can be used to regulate the nervous system and emotions, and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy to change negative associations and behavioural responses to trauma triggers.
